Halloween Never Ends With New Walking Dead and Universal Monsters Toys from DST!

Think Halloween is over? It’s not over! Halloween can never die! That’s why this Wednesday – a.k.a. New Toy Day – will bring four more horror-themed collectibles that the month of October could not contain! Check out what Diamond Select Toys has brought back from the grave, and then dig them up at your local comic book shop or specialty toy store!

Universal Monsters Black-and-White Legacy Series 2 Box Set
Between 1923 and 1958, Universal Studios released over 60 different monster movies, all in black-and-white, that gave the film world some of its most iconic characters. In honor of that legacy, this deluxe collectors’ box set presents three of the most famous Universal Monsters — Dracula, Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein — in their original-black and-white appearances! These exclusive 7-inch scale figures will only be available as part of this set, and come in a display-quality window box. Designed and sculpted by Rudy Garcia, Gabriel Marquez and Jean St. Jean!

Walking Dead Zombie Vinyl Bust Bank
Unlike the characters in Robert Kirkman’s ongoing comic series The Walking Dead, our future isn’t threatened by a zombie apocalypse. So why don’t you start saving for it? Put aside money for your zombie-proof dream house in this 8-inch vinyl bank depicting a lurker (or is it a roamer?) from the Walking Dead comic book, via the change slot in his back. Perched atop the book’s now-famous logo, this gruesome character will keep any weak-stomached burglars from plundering your nest egg. Sculpted by Eli Livingston!

Universal Monsters Frankenstein Bust Bank
Spinning out of DST’s successful line of Star Wars bust banks comes the all-new Universal Monsters series! The most famous monster of all, Frankenstein, will kick off this new line of 8-inch vinyl banks, which features highly detailed sculpts and paint. From the front it just looks like a high-quality bust, but turn it around and there’s a slot to keep your change in! Nobody will want to raid your savings when they’re safe inside this resurrected giant! Sculpted by Gabriel Marquez!

Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon Bust Bank
The second release in DST’s new line of vinyl banks was a no-brainer. After all, if you were going to make an 8-inch bust featuring highly detailed sculpts and paint, what monster would you want to see done right? The Creature from the Black Lagoon, of course! The scaly mer-monster has never looked better than in this detailed bank, and if you turn him around you can insert your loose change in a slot behind his gills. He’s the next evolution in banks! Sculpted by Bill Mancuso!

Visit comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest comic shop, and ask about the limited black-and-white editions of all three banks! Get regular DST updates on Facebook and Twitter!

Monsters Take Control

MONSTERS TAKE CONTROL
Monstrology Launches On Kickstarter

The Monstrology Group is pleased to announce the launch of their Kickstarter campaign for their debut horror anthology at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/863242470/monstrology-an-anthology-of-monsters. Assembled by Scott O. Brown and Rachel Deering, Monstrology is an anthology of eight different comics by eight different creative teams. Each team was assigned its own monster and location. What resulted is a wide variety of artistic styles and storytelling methods yielding an exciting collection of very different stories each with its own unique voice. Full color and 112 pages, the anthology will be a must have for any horror fan.

Scott O. Brown explains what makes this project different, “Everyone loves monsters but the unique nature of this project is that the Monsters are the driving theme of every story. These aren’t about twist endings–though we have some–nor is it about a good scare or gore–we have those, too. These stories mix and match monster in new milieus that bring out new, and interesting twists on the monsters and their victims.

Each story is listed below and a full description of each story can be found on the kickstarter project page.

The Disney Store Rings Out the Year with Three Marvel Select Exclusives!

http://www.artasylum.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/DisneyLizard_boxfront.jpg

Marvel toy collectors just got another reason to put the nearest Disney Store in their GPS. After partnering with Diamond Select Toys on four exclusive Marvel Select Avengers figures and two exclusive Amazing Spider-Man movie figures, the Disney Store has teamed up with DST yet again, to deliver three new Marvel Select figures that collectors will be dying to own!

The first figure (available now) is the Savage Hulk, a new, modern Hulk based on artist Marc Silvestri’s rendering of the character in recent issues of the Incredible Hulk from Marvel Comics. Depicting a more intelligent version of the Hulk than previous Select offerings, this figure was sculpted by frequent Marvel Select contributor Jean St. Jean, and stands over 9 inches tall with 16 points of articulation.

The next figure is the Lizard, the longtime foe of Spider-Man and his opponent in this past summer’s Amazing Spider-Man movie. While the Marvel Select line has given us the Lizard as he appeared in the film, this all-new sculpt by Gabriel Marquez (who did MS Magneto) is the line’s first rendering of Dr. Curt Connors based on his classic comic-book appearance. Sporting 16 points of articulation, including double-jointed knees, he stands over 8 inches tall (when not crouching to attack an innocent human) and comes with a New York City street display base.

The third new Marvel Select figure is Flash Thompson as Venom! Flash Thompson is not only the latest host to wear the Venom symbiote, he’s also the one with the most training. A decorated soldier before he lost his legs in the Middle East, Flash uses the Venom suit to undertake dangerous missions for the government, and to complete his missing limbs. This 7-inch figure, also by St. Jean, comes with two weapons and 16 points of articulation and comes packaged with a wreckage-strewn display base.

All of these figures come packaged in the famous bookshelf-ready Select packaging, but for those of you just starting your Marvel Select collection, both the Lizard and Venom will also come packaged in the first-ever Marvel Select box set! The Spider-Man: Fearsome Foes box set includes Spider-Man, Lizard, Venom and the Green Goblin, and this set, like the individual figures, is only available at the Disney Store, as well as at marvelstore.com and disneystore.com. Look for them this holiday season!

Review: Freelancers #1

Review: Freelancers #1
Boom Studios

By Robert Greenwood

Women and action have gone together like glue since the 60’s TV series the Avengers starring Miss Emma Peel. In time, action women have transcended the realm of fiction with TV shows like Charlie’s Angels up to Xena and beyond. In comics, a tough Amazon named Wonder Woman dominated comics from 1940’s to this very day. So any action based comic starring two female leads makes my mind rush with all the possibilities. Will it be like Lady Snowblood or are we getting some type of Femme Force?

Freelancers takes place in the modern day and is a tongue-in-cheek take on the “what if” world: what if Charlie’s Angels mixed with the lost boys of Peter Pan? Answer is simple enough.

We find two good friends trying to be the best at not really being the best in their field. Cas and Val grew up in a most unique orphanage. The likes that would make little Orphan Annie sing a lot more like Rza than a Hard Knock Life. They are trained in marital arts and become freelance “heroes” for hire. I use that term very very loosely. The story, without any spoilers, takes them from hit women to almost dead in nearly 20+ pages.

There is also a very cute back story as a pseudo double-feature in the back of the issue.

Overall, if you are a fan of comics like Gen 13 or Danger girl, this book is right up your alley.
