Concrete Park Earth Tour: Concrete Park Creators Bring Comic Book Skills to Belize!

Concrete Park Creators Bring Comic Book Skills, Media Savvy to Belize as part of “Concrete Park Earth Tour.”
Screenwriter Tony Puryear (Eraser), TV star Erika Alexander (The Cosby Show, Living Single) and her brother, sci-fi writer Robert Alexander, the creators of the hit Dark Horse Comics series Concrete Park, conducted a series of “comic book clinics” for high school and college students in Belize from Oct. 26th to Oct. 30th. It’s all part of an ambitious, larger agenda to spread the gospel of comics around the developing world.
Los Angeles, CA – Nov. 9, 2012 – Comics creators Tony Puryear, Erika Alexander and Robert Alexander are taking their show on the road. As the team behind the gritty sci-fi graphic novel, Concrete Park, serialized in the pages of Dark Horse Presents, they spin stories that deal with issues of race, poverty and exile. Now they’re traveling far from their LA base, beginning with the Central American nation of Belize, a county where those issues resonate, to teach a clinic in comic book creation and entrepreneurship. They will also judge a nation-wide Comic Book Competition For Schools at the University of Belize.
The team held five clinics in Belize City, in Placencia, in the capital city of Belmopan and in San Ignacio, from the auditorium at the University of Belize to the huge stage of the famous Bliss Institute.
Why teach the basics of comic book creation in a country of 300,000, a country where comics are not even for sale? (the team is working to change that). Why encourage school kids to try this medium, let alone compete in it? Erika Alexander explains: “Whether you live in the first world or the developing world, ideas are the most valuable currency there is. Our message is that your story is unique and valuable. Pencils and paper are cheap, and comics, whether self-printed or self-published on the web are a simple, accessible medium for expressing ideas in stories. In teaching comics creation, we are also teaching storytelling, business skills, entrepreneurship and connectivity.”

The whirlwind tour through Belize is the first stop in an ambitious agenda the team, in a nod to their sci-fi roots, has dubbed the “Concrete Park Earth Tour”. They plan on taking their comic book clinics to big, funky world cities like Mumbai, Johannesburg, Rio De Janeiro and Manila. “Concrete Park cities”, Puryear calls them. The kids in these cities face major challenges. Can a class in making comics make a difference? Team Concrete Park says “yes”.
“We grew up as outsider kids, kids without a lot of access to formal art or writing training” says Erika Alexander, “comics were a way in to a world of imagination and creativity. It’s amazing what these flimsy little books can do.” Robert Alexander adds “The poor kids in these cities have a story to tell, and they need to know their story matters. We’d like to help them tell that story.”
Tony Puryear says “New technology is blowing away barriers of race and language, making it possible to share your story, wherever you were born, whatever you look like. Though Belize is not a wealthy country, there is one cell phone there for every man, woman and child in the country, the highest per capita in Central America. We told the students there that they have powerful publishing platform right in their pockets. We can’t wait to see what they do with it, and we are thrilled to be a part of this world-changing process.”
The comic book clinics in Belize were sponsored by the Belize Diaspora Network, an organization devoted to building links between the Belizeans scattered across the globe and their country of origin. Bruce Henry of the Belize Diaspora Network says “This simple comic book clinic will be big for Belize, or rather, there’s nothing simple about it. Our kids will benefit from hands-on knowledge from professionals who are in the business of comic book art, but it’s not just about comics. It’s about entrepreneurship and reaching out beyond borders with new tools and media. Those skills are crucial to Belize’s future.”
Other sponsors include the Belize Tourism Board and NICH, the National Institute of Culture and History, The Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City, Robert’s Grove Beach Resort in Placencia and The San Ignacio Hotel in San Ignacio.

About Concrete Park
Concrete Park appears monthly in the Eisner Award-winning Dark Horse Presents, edited by Dark Horse Comics founder and Publisher Mike Richardson. Concrete Park was co-created by Erika Alexander and her husband, the screenwriter Tony Puryear (Eraser, Fahrenheit 451) and her brother, writer Robert Alexander. It tells a dark and provocative near-future story that takes place in a turbulent city on a distant, desert planet (think Cairo or Rio in space). Young human exiles from Earth must fight to make a new world there. They are “young, violent and ten billion miles from home”. Amid the struggle to survive this harsh urban environment there is also hope and beauty, that proverbial ‘rose in Spanish Harlem’. Puryear writes and draws the book. Reviews have been glowing:
Technorati says: “Concrete Park should be a stand-alone comic. It’s gorgeous and building in intensity.”http://technorati.com/entertainment/article/dark-horse-comics-new-release-reviews56/
Inside Pulse calls Concrete Park “fascinating” and adds “I’m appreciating the level of thought and planning on display in this series.” http://insidepulse.com/2012/02/06/the-weekly-round-up-113-with-dhp-planet-of-the-apes-fatale-izombie-sweet-tooth-more/
Comics Bulletin says: Every time I think I know what is going on in Concrete Park, (it) throws me for a loop. I have to read more.” http://www.comicsbulletin.com/main/reviews/advance-review-dark-horse-presents-9
Read About Comics said: “(Puryear’s) art… instantly grabbed my attention. His thick, heavy inks are striking, forming his characters with a great deal of confidence and force. Through his art, you instantly get a feel for this near-future (city); …the swagger of (the) characters and their surroundings just bursts off of the page.” http://www.readaboutcomics.com/2012/01/02/dark-horse-presents-7/

Review: Freelancers #1

Review: Freelancers #1
Boom Studios

By Robert Greenwood

Women and action have gone together like glue since the 60’s TV series the Avengers starring Miss Emma Peel. In time, action women have transcended the realm of fiction with TV shows like Charlie’s Angels up to Xena and beyond. In comics, a tough Amazon named Wonder Woman dominated comics from 1940’s to this very day. So any action based comic starring two female leads makes my mind rush with all the possibilities. Will it be like Lady Snowblood or are we getting some type of Femme Force?

Freelancers takes place in the modern day and is a tongue-in-cheek take on the “what if” world: what if Charlie’s Angels mixed with the lost boys of Peter Pan? Answer is simple enough.

We find two good friends trying to be the best at not really being the best in their field. Cas and Val grew up in a most unique orphanage. The likes that would make little Orphan Annie sing a lot more like Rza than a Hard Knock Life. They are trained in marital arts and become freelance “heroes” for hire. I use that term very very loosely. The story, without any spoilers, takes them from hit women to almost dead in nearly 20+ pages.

There is also a very cute back story as a pseudo double-feature in the back of the issue.

Overall, if you are a fan of comics like Gen 13 or Danger girl, this book is right up your alley.

Review:It’s Tokyo Charlie Brown

By Robert Greenwood

http://dyn1.media.forbiddenplanet.com/products/diamond/STK474/STK474295.jpg.size-290_maxheight-290_square-true.jpg

It’s Tokyo Charlie Brown

If, by now, fans of Alternative Mindz didn’t know, I am a huge fan of all things Japanese. I’ve been to Japan twice and my wife reads, writes and speaks Japanese.

I’m also a huge fan of The Peanuts so having the two together is like Reese’s.
I’ve sung the praises of the new Boom series and how it lives up to Charles Schultz and embodies the spirit and energy of his work.

So, how does this new adventure fit? First off the writer, Vicki Scott, placed segments of actual old strips into the story to meld the world as one, making this book seem like it “fit like a glove” as one of Charles M. Shultz’s own.

This story has a familiar theme. Charlie Brown once again fails at everything he does, letting his team down again as their coach and pitcher. This leads to all forms of torture by his peers through name calling. Despite all of this, he receives a letter in the mail to have his team play in Japan.

The reasoning gets lost as to why they are chosen but who cares? Get these kids to Tokyo!

They sprinkle bits of actual Tokyo into the story from images of Tokyo Tower to the “go to” tour bus of all of Tokyo, the Hato bus and more. Yet, they missed a real opportunity at showing the gang like fishes out of water by not taking them to Akihabara (Akiba) with the maid cafes or all the fun electronics, something they would look completely confused by. Also having Snoopy interact in a pachinko parlor is a personal wish.

It would have been something unique to have the game played in the Tokyo Dome. When Lucy makes fun of Chuck’s head, I thought we would get a game inside the Tokyo Giants’ turf.

Other than my Otaku grip, this is a perfect continuation of all the past “It’s ——- Charlie Brown” books and should be read by all who love The Peanuts and who love Japan. It’s over 100 pages and a super fast fun read for all ages.

Explore THE HIGH WAYS with John Byrne!

IDW Announces New Creator-Owned Series from the Comics Legend!

Continuing their ongoing partnership with legendary comics creator John Byrne, IDW Publishing is beyond pleased to announce THE HIGH WAYS, a brand-new, starbound adventure series written and drawn by Byrne!

THE HIGH WAYS follows the exploits of a spirited young man named Eddie Wallace. Hungry for the brand of wild adventure only available off-planet, Eddie joins up with a crew of a rock-hopping freighter, eager to see what lies beyond the clouds. As these things tend to go, however, everything in these early days of interstellar travel isn’t quite what it seems as intrigue and mystery abound.

“This evolved into something a bit more like Dan Dare, the British sci-fi strip so beloved from my childhood and early teens. I liked the idea of playing in that “old time sci-fi” kind of milieu, where all the adventures took place within the Solar System, and where life — even intelligent, humanoid life — was to be found everywhere,” said Byrne before adding an extra tidbit for his fans. “I decided this takes place in the Next Men “universe” –though in the altered timeline our heroes created when they wiped out Project Next Men. The time is eighty or ninety years in the Future, roughly, and a central character of the first arc is Eddie Wallace, who appeared briefly in the previous series.”

Another in a long line of fruitful partnerships with the iconoclastic Byrne, IDW is immensely proud of THE HIGH WAYS’ high adventure and exciting future series yet to come!

“I’ve found John Byrne’s boundless creativity, wealth of ideas and his ability to consistently deliver high-quality comics on time to be pretty much unmatched over the course of our six-plus years of working together,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and I’m happy to continue that with The High Ways. 2013 is going to be a big year for John Byrne and IDW, with John prepping two new series to roll out later in ’13 as well.”

THE HIGH WAYS #1 (of 4) (FC, 32 pages, $3.99) in stores 1/16/13.
