New Jersey’s baby boy is now a Minimate

It is no secret that I am a huge Kevin Smith mark. I even write an article where I compare Silent Bob to Alley Sheedy#s character from the breakfast club.

So it is with great honor to say that MiniMates forward this amazing press release to us.

Read below

When a new Minimates toy line is born, it’s a special time for everybody. So Diamond Select Toys is going to give birth at the most special time of all! A new line of Minimates is debuting at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, and it’s from the cinematic world of Kevin Smith!

The first exclusive two-pack includes Jay and Silent Bob in black-and-white, just as they appeared in Smith’s groundbreaking debut film, Clerks. Future sets will be in black and white as well as full-color, and will be based on all of the View Askew universe films: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks 2 and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back! Each Minimate mini-figure stands approximately 2 inches tall, with interchangeable parts and accessories.

The set will be available at the Diamond Select Toys booth, #2607, at a price of $10. Comic-Con International runs from Thursday, July 18 to Sunday July 21, with a Preview night on Wednesday.

TMNT: The Secret History of the Foot Clan TPB Best TMNT Story Ever Told

By Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

Straight on the success of everything that is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We get this amazing trade telling the “Secret” history of the evil Foot Clan.

TMNT-Footclan-pr-3-458d8 TMNT-Footclan-pr-4-2c006

The combination of history and folklore that is so rooted in Japan that it’s almost a historical lesson in Japanese culture. Yet it never comes off as smug or “weeaboo” (Total nerd of Japanese culture). Instead the story is smart and exciting and balances the present and the past.

The look of the Turtles in this tale is a little more gritty, but keeps their dialogue true to each member of the team. The art is outstanding and fits with the scheme of the story. Everything is a massive attack even though most of this is just a history lesson. I wish we could get this in other comics but I will take what I can get.

I give the Secret History of the Foot Clan a 4/5 and a must read for all TMNT fans. This is so far the best story ever told about the TMNT ever!!

BIKINI COWBOY – 5 out of 5! Find it at Comixology.com

By Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

Bikini_Cowboy_01

Set in the 1800′s American frontier, a woman by the name of Whisky Jill must protect a young boy with innate abilities that his original captors seek to exploit. Together they go on a spiritual journey that shows both the light and dark sides of humanity, and attain enlightenment.

Well that’s what it says on Comixology and the truth is I had no idea what I was going to be reading when I opened up the comic. Bikini Cowboy is one part Adult Swim and one part Pixar. The art is done almost like rough sketches for an animated film.

Yet for some reason it works on all levels, this Comic is so much fun and easy on the eyes. At parts it feels like an 1800’s version of Tank Girl. This comic book has all the elements needed to be a huge franchise success.

So if anyone out there is thinking is this book really that good should just go and download it now and you can read for yourself. If they cleaned up a bit of the language it would be a huge sell to someone like Disney to turn a bikini cowboy (Think Brave meets a cowboy surfer girl) into the next Disney super star.

This book is a solid 5/5 and should be read right now!

Akaneiro – A Really Solid Story Appealing to Fans of Bleach and InuYasha

By Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

Akaneiro22675

This is the second issue in the three issue arc; I once again am struggling with the art. As far as story goes it’s really solid and fans who love books like Bleach and InuYasha should fall in love with this story. I just feel the art work lets it down too much.

I hope that at some point in time we could get an amazing animated film out of this, time will tell. If I had to pick a director I’d have to say Sayo Yamamoto (Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, Eureka Seven, High School of the dead and Panty & Stocking with garter belt)

I will not tell you anything about this book only because it is such a solid read and you really should just pick it up and read for yourself.

Here is Dark Horse’s official release statement:

American McGee’s re-envisioning of Red Riding Hood takes shape as this all-new story. The brave young warrior Kani battles a gauntlet of fantastic mythical beasts inspired by Japanese folklore. However, things are not what they seem, and danger lurks where Kani least expects it!

Justin Aclin (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Vasilis Lolos (Conan the Barbarian)!

Based on the hot new game by American McGee’s Spicy Horse Games!

RED RIDING HOOD REIMAGINED!

I still can’t see the appeal of an artist who at any given time can’t properly draw a hand or keep eyes consistent enough that they look almost human. Akaneiro; the path of cloak and wolf is really a great read but has no art to help sell it. I give issue #2 a 3/5 only because of how great the story is.

Yet who knew that Superman was beaten by another famous athlete Antonino Rocca

This is something for the ages, a lot of young fans won’t even know who Rocca is.

I am so amazed that even now after collecting comics for nearly 30 years I can still be surprised from time to time.

Thank you Bill Finger for writing this into our collective history you are truly missed !

Plastic Paper Realm: Usagi Yojimbo

by Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

Welcome to the first article in a series talking about great comics that never had a truly great toy franchise.

Today I want to talk about a book that’s pushing 30 years now.

 Usagi Yojimbo  by Stan Sakai

A brief history

兎用心棒 Usagi Yōjinbō (pronounced oo-SA-gi) “The Rabbit Bodyguard” created by Stan Sakai that first appeared in Albedo Anthropomorphics #2 published by Thoughts and Images in November 1984.

Stan Sakai accepted an offer to move his warrior rabbit to Fantagraphics Books where he appeared in several issues of the new anthropomorphic anthology series, Critters.

Usagi’s popularity influenced Fantagraphics to then release the Usagi Yojimbo Summer Special in October 1986.

Finally, Fantagraphics gave the ronin rabbit his own on-going series with issue #1 being published in July 1987.

The adventures of this talented anthropomorphic biped have captivated comic fans for a long time yet he has never seen a proper toy line.

Don’t get me wrong he was made into a few figures over the years. In the TMNT vintage line, he appeared twice. Nothing that was groundbreaking.

One issue that diehard fans have is that Usagi is neither dressed nor resembles his comic book counterpart other than the ears in a bun.

tmnt usagi vintage

I make exceptions for toys that are really out there and Space Usagi gets the pass for just being too quirky and over the top!

space usagi

When characters who are basically in the same vein as Usagi, like Bucky O’Hare, get a full fledged toy line, why didn’t our beloved Rabbit warrior?

bucky ohare

In the late 90’s, Antarctic Press released an Usagi Yojimbo figure that did its best to capture the comic book.

Of course, being it was the 90’s, comic book fans couldn’t escape the dreaded variant versions.

In the early 2000’s, the return of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (redubbed “TMNT”) brought new and more adult themes into the world of the Fab Four. With their return, they brought their totally awesome rabbit friend in to the modern toy world.

TMNT usagi

Needless to say that with the rise of direct market and high end action figures, Usagi and the gang could very well be made into an awesome toy line in the year 2013.

In 2003 Dark Horse released a PVC of Usagi.

Unfortunately, this has almost no articulation but does retain a lot of what makes Usagi who he is.

Who would I pick to handle such a monumental undertaking event?  Minimates! Having a full line of 2 inch figures makes me smile from ear to ear.  Mininates, who first out could capture the cartoon style of Sakai and give a robust collection which could then be incorporated into any preexisting Minimates toy line.

With its parent company Diamond Select, we could also get a 7 inch tall highly detailed collectors figure of Usagi to add as well.

review_capskull_1

We have been treated to Usagi in statue form but a proper figure still alludes us. With Sakai doing Usagi right for so long and his new series, 47 Ronin, being a modern masterpiece, plus Usagi getting his own hack and slash app game, a proper figure would just be the icing on the cake.

usagi game

Let us also not forget that in 2011, IGN ranked Miyamoto Usagi 92nd in the top 100 comic books heroes.

There is no time like the present to bring action figures back to Usagi Yojimbo.

Captain Midnight #0 – Williamson, Ibáñez, Pérez – Amazing! – 4 out of 5!

By Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

22972

What more can I say… I am now officially tongue tied. In fact, I wish I could just publish all the pages of this issue and just let you have at it yourself. Ok I can’t actually do that. (The editor doesn’t want to get in trouble )
Captain Midnight is another amazing 40′s character. (Why do the 1940′s superheroes just seem so much fun?) He is a war hero, a man out of his element lost in the year 2013. You know the drill, but even knowing the drill doesn’t take away from an exciting new book.

You will learn all about his past and how he ended up in the future, a future that isn’t all that impressive to him. The story has some great killer art work from Ibáñez (Defenders, Swamp Thing) and Pérez (Archer and Armstrong, Harbinger, Smallville S11) and Joshua Williamson’s (Masks and Mobsters, Voodoo, Xenoholics) solid writing.

If the following issues live up to this #0 one then add this to your pull list immediately!

captmid0p1 captmid0p2 captmid0p3

captmid0p4 captmid0p5 captmid0p6

I am giving Captain Midnight 4/5 with the hopes that issue 1 will be 5/5 crossing fingers.
